JOHOR BARU: State secretary Datuk Ismail Karim announced Thursday, June 26 as a state public holiday after Johor Darul Takzim FC (JDT) were crowned 2014 Malaysia Super League champions.
The announcement was made at Dataran Bandaraya here to a gathering of JDT supporters who were watching a live telecast of the match held at the Kuching Stadium in Sarawak.
JDT defeated Sarawak 1-0, edging out second-placed Selangor by three points.
“The decision to make tomorrow (Thursday) a public holiday was made after the Johor Ruler assented to it.
“It is a major win for Johor after failing to hold any title for the last 24 years,” he said when contacted.
He added that the public holiday was a sign of gratitude by the state for Johoreans.
This is the first win for the JDT as a club, as the state had previously won the league back in 1991.
